Looking back on three years of interviewing photographers & visual art enthusiasts around the globe, we must point out that here on TTL we’ve become accustomed to the genius of Montreal-based photographers and artists. So as we venture into Eddy Lee’s portrait-heavy world, don’t expect him to break this trend.
- Who is Eddy Lee ? how would you describe yourself in a few words ?
There isn’t much to talk about. My names are Nana N. Eddy Lee and as much as my last name sounds, I am Cameroonian not Chinese. I currently live in Montreal, Canada where I study Civil Engineering at Concordia University.
- On a scale from 0 – 10 how would you rate your interest in Photography ?
I’d say above 10. It is so fun. Especially when you find yourself surrounded by brilliant people. Photography to me is all about capturing moments, expressions and emotions or feelings through a lens.
- What kind of photography are you most drawn to ? Portrait, Landscape or Abstract ?
All three but mostly Portrait because a lot of people come to me for that. I take most of my landscapes with my phone. That is because I never plan for that. I walk with my Camera only when I have an appointment with someone. Abstract almost never.
- When and how did you develop your interest in photography ?
Almost 2 years now. Why Photography when I’m studying Engineering? I also get that a lot. To be honest I don’t know. Before I never showed interest in it at all but I always loved to have a nice wallpaper or beautiful screen saver. Now I can have a wallpaper of my work. I used to hate taking pictures but loved having a beautiful shot as my screen saver. Also, I guess I was influenced by friends – Friend Photographers. I realized I was into photography when I purchased my camera.
- How would you describe the impact of photography on your life ?
Photography really opened my eyes. I look at things differently now. Now I enjoy going to museums. Before I would just walk around looking at things but now I don’t only look, I also analyze and try to understand.
- What inspires you ?
Pretty much everything. I get inspired at any time and by anything. I legit can get in a kitchen, look around and then just by looking at the sink come up with something. During every photoshoot I always end up doing things I had not planned for.
- You currently live in Montreal, a city which is known for its plethora of talented photographers and visual artists, do you think evolving as a photographer in this setting has had an impact on your creativity and the work you produce?
Of course, surrounding yourself with talented people is so much fun. I learned a lot by collaborating with other Artists not only photographers and I am still learning. I consider myself an ‘Amateur’ and I always want to do better. I’m always in search of ideas, locations or what I call ‘Spots’, models and more.
- What’s next for you ? any projects or ideas you would like to share ?
For now nothing special. I am new in the game and all I do is geared towards learning and building my work. I’ve also been thinking about videos because I’ve had a lot of people requesting for video clips and montage but that is really just a thought for the moment.
- What advice would you give my readers
I do not have a lot to give. From my little experience, if you who is reading this is new in the game and want to be a good photographer, you should have a unique style of your own. You could do a lot of things but at the end there should be a style you feel best at and from there eventually people or even brands/companies will come to you for that.
