Although we often strive for objectivity on this platform, from time to time we have to make personal disclaimers like this one: We have totally been “STANING” over this artist for a while now and this feature has been a long time coming. This is not the first time we’ve invited graphic designers and illustrators to be featured on Through Thy Lens; and so far they have helped demonstrate how complementary these avenues are for photography. As such, Guy Kouekam’s work is a reminder of what it means for visual art to be multidisciplinary and as you get a glimpse of his work here, we hope you will join the fan-base. Enjoy !

- Who is Guy Kouekam ? how would you describe yourself in a few words ?
My name is, GUY KOUEKAM and I am a Cameroonian Graphic Designer/ Artistic director in different fields and above all, I am passionate about ART and its different forms of
expression.
- On a scale from 0 – 10 how would you rate your interest in visual art / photography / drawing ?
No doubt ! 10/10, LMAO
- You said it yourself , that nowadays you consider yourself more of an artist and less of a photographer , could you share how this transition came about and why ?
Yes, i don’t define myself as a photographer, i just got a real interest for that and like some of my friends says, “i got a good eye”. It’s because i see things in my own way, and i start to capture it, and share my vision with others. I feel more comfortable with the Artist label because, at the end of the day, all i want is to create. It’s the reason why I explore my creativity through photography, drawing or wall painting. And maybe i’ll try something new in the future, who knows? 🙂
- If there was a particular emotion/ feeling that you wish your artwork would spark in the people who see them , what would it be ?
It would be self-confidence and beauty. This is the main thing i try to shoot when i do what i do. Most of the time, people don’t realize how beautiful they are. So my goal is to show it to them. We are all different but we are all beautiful. The more they are aware of it the more they give a soul to my picture. I just give them back the reflection of what they really are.
- What inspires you ?
I’m inspired by beauty around me, especially when i travel. This is the most important thing for my balance actually.
“Traveling leaves you speechless, then turns you into storyteller.”

- As an African artist, what’s your take on the role creativity plays in your narrative and how have your creative endeavours impacted your life ?
I think creativity brings change. As an African artist i really feel concerned by the way other people see my continent. We have so many things to share with the world. We have a real identity which can bring us to the top of the world stage. And this is not only about art. It’s just one of many ways. Personally, this passion has brought me where i’m standing now and i’m not done yet. My work helps me to share my vision of the beauty we have here in Africa . No matter what i produce, i aim for the international standard. Africa is more than poverty or political instability. It’s the future !

- What are your other interests in life ?
Everything around self transcendence, Design, Music.

- What’s next for you ? any projects or ideas you would like to share ?
In 2019, I wish that my first exhibition show around photography and painting will happen. I’m working on it step by step.
- What advice would you give my readers ?
” You are what you think “, focus, never stop chasing your dreams and keep moving toward your goals.
